How Can I Tell If I Am In Early Pregnancy?
There are many signs of early pregnancy. You’re probably familiar with some of them already. Let’s take a look at them and why they occur. For some of them, there are ways to make them easier to deal with. Others just “are.” Most are caused by the change in hormones coursing through the body. Some you can expect if your mother had them with her pregnancies, others are totally individual.
Tell-Tale Signs of Pregnancy – What To Watch For
One of the first ways to know you are in early pregnancy is if you have morning sickness – the classic nausea that women warn other women about. Unfortunately, it can come all day long, so it is somewhat optimistically named. Lucky mothers-to-be don’t have morning sickness at all, others worry that they won’t ever get over it. Most find that by the end of the first trimester it has gone away. This sign usually starts between 2 and 8 weeks after conception. Mothers who manage morning sickness recommend eating saltines just before getting up in the morning and eating many smaller meals instead of large ones.
Another sign mothers-to-be notice is missing a period, or it being late. Once a woman is pregnant, she shouldn’t have her next period. Some women, however, will have “breakthrough bleeding,” which occurs when the fertilized egg implants on the wall of the uterus, releasing some of the blood that was stored on the uterine walls. Missing a period is probably the primary signal to a woman that she might want to take a pregnancy test – she is likely in early pregnancy!
Extreme fatigue can begin as early as one week after conception, leading the mother to wonder what’s happening to her – it can feel as if she is drugged and can’t get enough sleep. Since fatigue can also be caused by many other things – including stress, depression, or an illness – this symptom is often misunderstood initially.
A few signs of early pregnancy are directly related to the hormonal shifts in the body. These include tender or swollen breasts, a darkening of the areolas (the round circle of darker pigment around the nipple), frequent urination.
Some women also feel lightheaded or faint during early pregnancy, or have heartburn or constipation.
New Pregnancy = Same Symptoms?
Not necessarily. Every pregnancy is a new event, with a new fetus inside the mother. Depending on the chemical makeup of the mother’s body at the time of the pregnancy, as well as the baby’s XX / XY makeup, the mother may or may not have the same symptoms of early pregnancy with the next baby. Some symptoms of early pregnancy can be anticipated, if the woman’s mother had it (such as morning sickness and exhaustion) but others are totally individual. Your pregnancy is your own, and not necessarily like anyone else’s. Enjoy your pregnancy, and don’t let the little quirks of early pregnancy get you down!
